USC ICT Executive Director Randy Hill cited Brillhart’s breadth of experience across emerging technologies as a point of alignment with MxR. “We are experiencing an inspired movement in the advancement of mixed reality developed for training, education, health and entertainment,” Hill said in a statement. “USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies has helped lead technical modernization in the virtual and augmented segments by making major contributions to the development of Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard, and we anticipate that the hiring of Jessica will continue that imaginative spirit for the lab’s narrative and experiential content.

SXSW is also where Brillhart announced Traverse, a spatial audio app produced through her latest company, Vrai Pictures.  As she segues to her new role at MxR, Brillhart is hoping to use the position as an opportunity to help the industry grow by broadening who is able to participate in its evolution. "What will be crucial in this next stage of the MxR lab is thinking about inclusive and more meaningful experiential design," Brillhart said. "It’s not just the content that needs to be considered here; it also involves the tools that we use to create that content and the platforms on which the content will live.

Brillhart echoed Hill’s sentiment in sharing her motivation in joining MxR at this moment in the progression of XR — which for her involves a cross-country transition from New York to Los Angeles. "I look forward to collaborating with peers at USC and more extensively with the ecosystem outside the University — with institutions and creators from all over the world — in order to better understand and develop the next phase of the lab’s ongoing contribution to the evolution of the immersive space," Brillhart said.

Now, the Mixed Reality Lab is announcing a new director: Jessica Brillhart. "I have had incredible respect for what ICT has been doing for a while now," Brillhart said in an interview with the author. "I feel that a lot of us in the immersive space owe a great deal to the research that has happened there and I’m honored to continue to lead that charge at MxR.
